Three Social Networking Activities for Silent Reading

Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) is an essential part of my classroom. But sometimes the reflection and assessment is lost. While students are given time to read, it’s difficult to engage in authentic discussion, reflection, even assessment. Using social media tools can aid with this. Students typically engage in silent reading once a week, and most of the assessment is a done through social media. Using Flipgrid, Padlet, and Edmodo, students are able to reflect on their learning and create discussions and reflections on their reading.

1. Reflection using Flipgrid

Students engage in SSR every Thursday for 30, then the last ten minutes engaging in reflection using Flipgrid. Students will follow the direction posted on the grid.

Directions:

In your reflection, be sure to do the following:

  1. Give the title of the book, author, and show the cover
  2. Share the pages that you read
  3. Briefly summarize what happened today
  4. Answer three of the questions on the SSR Reflection Deep Questions document
  5. Submit!

By this time next week | Respond to three others’ reflections. Comment or ask a question.

2. Quote Wall using Padlet

Once a week—and using Padlet—students will post quotes (no longer than two sentences) from their SSR novels that made an impact on them along with a one to two sentences rationale reflecting on its impact.

They are also required to rate and comment on others’ quotes.

3. SSR Projects using Edmodo

Edmodo is used as a Silent Reading Project Portal. Students will access the site to post ideas, ask questions, and collaborate on projects. Edmodo allows students to collaborate and communicate in and outside of the classroom on projects. Students will also use Edmodo to submit their finished projects. In this example, groups have been set up based on popular genres and titles for students to collaborate and share ideas.
